Starting November 29, 2008, multiple design applications will no longer be admissible at the Saudi Patent Office. This comes following a recent memorandum issued by the General Directorate of Industrial Property on November 16, 2008. With this new decision, it will only be possible to cover a single embodiment of the design in a single design application. In cases where a design consists of a number of variations, the applicant will be required to file a separate design application for each embodiment. It is worthwhile noting that in cases where priority is claimed based on an application with multiple designs, a separate Saudi application will be filed for each design but the Saudi Patent Office will only require one certified copy of the priority document. Simple copies of this document will then be filed with each application.
