Saudi Arabia: Expanding IP Cooperation with Japan

Saudi Arabia and Japan have expanded their intellectual property (IP) cooperation through a recent bilateral meeting between the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO), held on June 2, 2024. This meeting builds on the 2019 Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC), which initially focused on collaborative projects in patent examination, human resource development, and public awareness of IP rights.

The extended MOC now includes initiatives aimed at bolstering IP enforcement, with the goal of fostering innovation and economic growth in both countries. These new initiatives will involve joint training programs for IP enforcement officers, the development of shared databases to track IP infringements, and public campaigns to educate businesses about protecting their intellectual property.

Saudi Arabia demonstrates its commitment to developing and establishing a competent IP system and shows its awareness of the strategic importance of IP in the country’s economic development.
