The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently approved a new plan to allow for non-Latin characters in web extensions (country-code Internationalized Domain Name IDN). The IDN will enable countries that use scripts other than Latin, such as Chinese, Arabic, and Greek, to offer their users domain names in their local language characters. New applications for domains in non-Latin characters will soon be accepted, and the new domains are expected to come online in the second half of the year 2010.
