The United Arab Emirates has introduced its first federal Geographical Indications (GI) system, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s intellectual property framework. This initiative aims to safeguard products with unique qualities linked to specific regions, thereby enhancing their global competitiveness and preserving cultural heritage.

The GI system provides legal protection for products whose distinct characteristics are attributable to their geographical origin. The inaugural phase includes four products: Hatta honey, Ras Al Khaimah ceramics, Dabbas dates from Al Dhafra, and traditional palm frond crafts. These items are recognized for their unique qualities derived from their specific regions and traditional production methods.

The Ministry of Economy has made the GI registration process accessible online, inviting applications from both domestic and international producers. Currently, 25 additional products, encompassing food items and handicrafts, are under review for GI registration. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy to diversify its economy, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and promote sustainable development.
