The third round of negotiations for the Japan–United Arab Emirates Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) took place in Tokyo from June 2 to 4, 2025. Officials from both countries held in-depth discussions on several key trade areas, including intellectual property (IP).
The talks addressed a broad range of topics such as Trade in Goods, Rules of Origin, Trade in Services, Competition Policy, Customs Procedures and Trade Facilitation, and Digital Trade. Intellectual property emerged as one of the focal points, underscoring its growing importance in modern economic partnerships.
Both parties agreed to continue discussions and coordinate the timing of the next round of negotiations through diplomatic channels.
The inclusion of IP in the EPA discussions signals increased alignment between Japan and the UAE in strengthening rights protection, enforcement, and cooperation mechanisms—developments that could shape the future of IP regulation and practice across both markets.
