The Qatari Ministry of Commerce and Industry has started accepting industrial design applications, putting into effect Law No. 10 of 2020 on Industrial Designs and its Implementing Regulations No. 129 of 2024.
The new system allows applicants to claim a six-month priority period and include up to 100 drawings in a single application, provided all designs belong to the same class. Examination will take place within 30 days from filing, with applicants given 90 days to respond to any office actions. The opposition period is 60 days from publication, and registrations are valid for five years, renewable twice for a total of 15 years.
Required documents include a legalized power of attorney, identification of the applicant and designer, clear representations of the design, class indication under the Locarno Classification, a description of the design’s intended use, and Arabic translations of non-Arabic documents.
This step reinforces Qatar’s commitment to enhancing its intellectual property framework and bringing its design protection system in line with international practices.
