According to Notification no. 25/08 issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on November 28, 2008, Oman has declared that that the one-year time limit allowed for its Trademark Office to notify WIPO of a refusal of protection or an opposition to the granting of protection of an international application is to be extended to 18 months. This declaration was made in accordance with Article 5(2) (b) of the Madrid Protocol related to the refusal and invalidation of the effects of international registrations in respect of certain contracting parties. The declaration became effective in the country on March 12, 2008.
By way of background, Oman deposited the instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol on July 16, 2007, and which entered into force in the country three months later. This came in compliance with Ministerial Resolution no. 37 of 2007 issued earlier in Oman marking the government’s approval of the country’s accession to a number of WIPO-administered treaties.
