It has been recently reported that the Trademark Office of Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan will start accepting trademark applications for the Kurdistan region. This Office will operate under the Kurdistan regional government, independently from the Iraqi Trademark Office.
Given the precarious situation in the country, extensive and detailed information on the matter has yet to be revealed by the competent authorities. A meeting is reportedly scheduled between representatives from both Trademark Offices (Erbil and Baghdad) in the coming month. We expect this meeting to provide clarifications on several contemplated questions that may arise, including the one of whether it will be necessary to seek local protection for a mark in Iraqi Kurdistan if the same is already registered at the Iraqi Trademark Office.
