Arabic Domain Names Soon
March 19, 2010
Egypt, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are the first three countries from our region to complete the linguistic and technical requirements specified by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The requirements come as part of the new project introduced by ICANN last year to allow for non-Latin characters in web extensions (country-code Internationalized Domain Name IDN). The IDN will enable countries that use scripts other than Latin, such as Chinese, Arabic, and Greek, to offer their users domain names in their local language characters. This means that Egypt, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are expected to offer domain names in Arabic characters very soon. Following this development, it will become essential for trademark owners doing business in these three countries to register the desirable Arabic domain names for protection against cyber-squatting.
