Jordan registered 20 new patents and 999 trademark applications in the first quarter of 2025, building on the 111 patents and 5,687 trademarks filed in 2024, according to data released by the Industrial Property Protection Directorate.
Of the patents filed between January and March, one was attributed to a local innovator, highlighting continued engagement in domestic R&D. The Directorate also renewed 138 patents, processed 310 change requests, approved 499 ownership transfers, and issued five industrial property licenses. In parallel, 1,608 trademarks were renewed in the same period.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s 2023 rankings, Jordan ranked 58th globally in patent filings, with residents submitting 21 applications—a 16% year-on-year decline. Pharmaceuticals and medical technology were the leading technical fields.
While challenges remain, including low patenting rates relative to GDP and a limited share of women inventors, universities continue to play a key role, contributing nearly half of Jordan’s Patent Cooperation Treaty applications. Meanwhile, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and China remain the primary international destinations for Jordanian IP filings.
