Oman: Omani Frankincense Granted International GI Protection
May 05, 2026
Omani frankincense has obtained international geographical indication (GI) protection through the World Intellectual Property Organization, becoming the first product from the Gulf region to receive recognition under the Lisbon system.
The registration reinforces the link between Omani frankincense and its geographical origin, formally recognizing the product’s reputation and distinctive qualities at the international level. The protection follows Oman’s accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement, which facilitates the international registration of geographical indications and appellations of origin.
The recognition is expected to strengthen the international positioning of Omani frankincense, support enforcement against misuse of the name abroad, and contribute to wider efforts aimed at leveraging intellectual property frameworks to protect and promote national products.
